NUCCA CHIROPRACTIC TECHNIQUE

NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association) is a specialized technique targeted at properly aligning the top cervical vertebrae in the neck. This top cervical vertebra is often referred to as "the Atlas".

How do I know whether my atlas is in alignment?

Careful palpation and specialized x-rays are used to determine if the Atlas bone is aligned properly. The X-rays reveal the direction and degree of misalignment. The delicate nature of the atlas allows it to sublux easily so atlas imbalance can be common.  Prior head trauma furthers the the probability of atlas imbalance.

SYMPTOMS OF ATLAS SUBLUXATION

  • loss of balance and coordination
  • headaches/migraines
  • neck pain
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • tongue spasm or numbness
  • feeling as though ants are crawling on face
  • fluttering in ear
  • twitching eyelids
  • strange neurological deficits
  • changes in intestines such as constipation and loss of appetite

ADJUSTMENT PROCESS - Dr. Chad

Patients lay on either their right or left side on a treatment table. Using a gentle pressure with the hand or a tool that mimics the hands, Chad will align the vertebra back into balance with the vertebrae below. There is no “cracking” of the neck involved in the treatment of the atlas. X-rays will then be performed to make sure that the alignment is correct.

FOLLOW UP

Initially it may take multiple adjustments for treatment of the atlas to remain permanent. We also strongly recommend post adjustment exercises  to strengthen the musculature of the neck to maintain proper alignment.
